The RollerMouse Red by Contour Design is a central pointing device that is positioned in prime real estate immediately between the operator and keyboard space bar. This keeps all mousing activity "inline", i.e., in the area immediately in front of the keyboard, eliminating the need to reach for a mouse. This also makes it suitable for use where there may be insufficient room for a mouse to be placed immediately beside the keyboard. Like all RollerMice, cursor movement is achieved by manipulating the tube-like cylindrical "rollerbar" with the fingertips. Rotating the rollerbar moves the cursor up and down, and sliding the bar from side to side accomplishes horizontal movement. Once the desired location is achieved, a left click can be generated by pressing down on the bar (the force required for this is adjustable from an ultra-light touch to highly tactile). Eight buttons and a scroll wheel are located below the bar to generate left/middle/right clicks, copy, paste, back, forward and vertical scrolling. There is also a cursor speed button between the copy and paste buttons for accessing ten different speed settings ranging from 600 to 2800 dpi. The Red also comes with adjustable keyboard "risers" to lift up standard and compact single piece keyboards. Controls can also be customized using the downloadable driver.
The RollerMouse Red is equipped with a larger diameter rollerbar than the FREE3 or PRO3. This 0.8" diameter bar is 7.1" wide and offers a finer degree of control, especially for vertical movement. The entire surface of the bar is textured with raised bumps that offer tactile feedback to further improve all aspects of cursor control. The robust aluminum housing is solid and sturdy, and the padded palm support can be removed if desired to reduce the overall depth for greater comfort or if space is constrained. Innovative tracking technology on the RollerMouse Red further enhances cursor control, especially valuable on multi-monitor workstations. All these design elements make cursor control more precise and effortless without compromising durability and robustness. To further improve the ergonomics even the traditional mechanical "click" has been replaced with a newer "virtual" clicking mechanism that generates a "percussion-free" but audible "click" that can be adjusted in volume or fully disabled if so desired.
The RollerMouse Red Wireless is available with two different depths of palm support. The standard model is suited for most individuals whereas the PLUS model has a noticeably deeper palm support that extends the overall depth of the PLUS by an additional 2.3 inches. Because this extra depth moves the Rollerbar and the keyboard further away from the body the PLUS is really only suitable for those with significantly larger or longer hands. Both models of the RollerMouse Red Wireless can also be purchased bundled with the low profile Balance Keyboard from Contour Design.
The RollerMouse Red is also available as a wired device. The RollerMouse Red offers all of the same features along with a direct, wired connection.

Eliminates Overreaching for a Traditional Mouse, Relieving Neck, Shoulder and Elbow Pain - Conventional keyboards will result in overreaching for the mouse as it is necessary to reach over the arrow keys and numeric keypad to get to the mouse. This can lead to neck, shoulder and elbow pain and discomfort. Asymmetrical reaching with one side of the body and not the other causes muscle groups to compensate for the weight of the extended arm while reaching for a traditional mouse. Repetitive overreaching will often lead to tightness and pain in the neck, shoulder and elbow areas. The RollerMouse Red allows the elbows to be kept comfortably at the sides in a neutral, ergonomic position. Learn More About the Comfort Zone.
Prevents Static Grip of the Mouse - The RollerMouse Red is controlled with an open relaxed hand and slightly curled fingers, with no possibility of clutching or holding the device to achieve cursor control. Fingertips simultaneously rotate and slide the thick rollerbar to navigate the cursor over the entire screen, with very little friction or resistance. By eliminating the muscle activity required to grip a mouse, the associated compression through the carpal tunnel is also avoided. Learn More About Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Ambidextrous Cursor Control - By centrally locating the mouse buttons inline beneath the center of the letter keys, mouse control is equidistant from either hand. Ambidextrous use is encouraged and easily accomplished.
Reduction of Repetitive Actions - Any finger can be used to click on the rollerbar, spreading the load across both hands, unlike most mice where only the index finger is able to generate left clicks, which can lead to the development of trigger finger. Learn More About Trigger Finger.
Reduces Unnecessary and Awkward Movements - The "One Touch" buttons for Copy, Paste, and Double Click reduce unnecessary cursor movement, clicking, and awkward keyboard stretches.
Repetitive Vibration Reduction - The percussion-free click design eliminates the repetitive minute vibrations that can irritate tissue and nerves.
Wire Free Deployment - For those who do not want or cannot have a wired mouse, especially those using sit stand desks, the wireless model meets those needs, so that there is no hassle involved in managing unsightly cables or wires on the desk.
Wireless Technology: The RollerMouse Red Wireless uses wireless technology to allow the desktop to be free of cords/cables, so that clutter can be minimized and workable space maximized. Wireless dongles included in either the Rollermouse Red Wireless or the Balance Keyboard will let both devices connect via a single receiver.
Wireless Data Security: All data being entered using wireless products from Contour Design is secured using AES 128 bit encryption. During the pairing process a random encryption key is generated and exchanged between the dongle and the wireless device, then stored and used afterwards to secure the communication.
Advanced Rollerbar Tracking Technology: The most unique feature of the RollerMouse Red is the large textured rollerbar, a cylindrical tracking device with sensors (800 to 2400 dpi) built right into the bar itself. Rotating the bar moves the cursor up and down on the screen, with lateral left or right movement accomplished by simply sliding the rollerbar from side to side. The combination of rotation and lateral movement gives complete cursor control. The advanced tracking technology adjusts cursor speed and acceleration based upon the speed and distance of these movements.
Large Diameter Textured Rollerbar: The 0.8" diameter rollerbar is textured with raised bumps, so that finger tactility is greatly increased, providing better control of the device and making it as accurate as any other mouse.
Aluminum Housing: The RollerMouse Red has an aircraft-grade aluminum housing that ensures rigidity, eliminating the potential for twisting or bending that could potentially affect the rollerbar functionality, especially if it is used on uneven surfaces.
Percussion-Free Clicking: In order to give the feeling of tactility to the rollerbar when it is depressed, special sensors are used to generate an audible but "percussion-free" click. This feature can also be turned off completely, so that no audible click is heard while depressing the rollerbar to generate a left click action. The degree of force required to generate clicks can also be adjusted according to personal preferences.
Rollerbar Click Force Adjustment: The degree of downward force that is required to generate a rollerbar click can be changed by simply pressing a button combination. The five available settings accommodate differing force levels according to individual preference.
Palm Supports: The RollerMouse Red also comes with a detachable cushioned leatherette palm support that can relieve stress on the wrists while typing and using the rollerbar. The palm support can also be completely detached from the RollerMouse Red when not needed or wanted. In that case the rigid aluminum housing of the RollerMouse Red then serves as a palm support, however unlike the leatherette there is no padding at all.
Easy to Use Keyboard “Lifters”: Ultra-slim keyboards are becoming increasing popular, so Contour Design has included two keyboard lifters that can be installed to change the height and angle of most standard one-piece keyboards. There are three heights to choose from: low (flat), high (flat), and sloping down and away from the rollerbar (to create a negatively sloped keyboard inclination).
Plug and Play Connectivity for both PC and Mac Computers: The RollerMouse Red is HID compliant and has the drivers on board. Once plugged into any USB port it will install the drivers and provide notification when it is ready for use.
Eight Pre-Programmed Button Functions: There are two easy options to perform a left click. Either press down on the rollerbar itself, or click on the large left button in the button control area. Other button functions include a traditional right click button, a single touch "double click" button, a scroll wheel, a cursor speed button, "one touch" copy and "one touch" paste, as well as a middle click or autoscroll.
Cursor Speed Selection: The RollerMouse Red has 10 different cursor speed settings that can be changed in a moment with the press of a dedicated speed control button. Five lights directly above the button identify the current speed setting. The DPI settings are: 600, 800, 1000, 1200, 1400, 1600, 1800, 2000, 2400 and 2800. When finer cursor control is required the lower settings offer enhanced precision while the higher speeds provide much greater cursor movement when working across multiple screens.
Programmable Driver: Although the RollerMouse Red works plug and play, the button functions can also be easily reprogrammed and customized by simply downloading the programmable driver from the Contour Design website.
Click Sound Adjustability: Because the audible "click" generated when the rollerbar is depressed is electronically generated, it is possible to adjust the volume or to turn the "audible notification" fully off.
Rechargeable: The RollerMouse Red Wireless is rechargeable via the included cable, or the cable can be left attached and the RollerMouse Red Wireless will then default to communicate as a wired device.
Five Functions for the Double Click Button: The RollerMouse Red Wireless's double click button can change usage so that five different functions can be performed: Middle Click, Double Click, Left Click, Right Click, and Freeze Click. "Freeze Click" is used to recenter or reposition the cursor without moving the cursor with the rollerbar. This can be useful, for example, in multi-monitor setups.

Do not use your thumbs to move the rollerbar! The rollerbar is designed to be moved by the fingers, which are drawn towards the torso when the rollerbar is accessed. While using the thumbs may feel natural at first, accessing the rollerbar with the thumbs actually requires you to reach back to access the rollerbar and will tend to position the thumbs in an almost overextended position where there is sustained tension when moving the rollerbar. Repetitively engaging the thumbs in such an awkward manner may over time cause fatigue and pain.
Make sure the edge of the keyboard closest to you is straight with no built-in palm support. This point is very important, since any curved edge or palm support between keyboard and the RollerMouse will only create more distance between you and the keyboard, creating additional problems of overreaching.
Clean out the rollerbar channel area once in a while. This is advised so that you get the greatest life expectancy for your RollerMouse. Due to build up of debris in critical parts of the RollerMouse mechanisms, the internal sensors and switches can malfunction over time. Cleaning can be accomplished by turning your RollerMouse over and gently tapping it to dislodge any particles in the rollerbar channel. Better still, if you have compressed air available, use it to blow out any debris or dirt.
If you are going to use your RollerMouse Red and keyboard on a tray, make sure the tray is at least 10.5" deep. Since many standard keyboards are about 6" deep and the RollerMouse Red itself 3.25" or 3.9" deep (depending on whether the wrist rest is installed), you will need a tray at least 10.5" deep in order to properly stabilize both keyboard and mouse on the tray surface. Note: The RollerMouse Red PLUS is 6.2" deep with the wrist rest installed and will require a tray that is at least 12" in depth, such as the Extra-Deep ABS Plastic Low Profile Tray from Foxbay.
Take turns using either left or right hands to move the rollerbar. By alternating hands periodically, you lessen the fatigue in both hands, and so help reduce the overall risk of developing pain from extensive mousing. The ambidextrous nature of the RollerMouse encourages such usage. Once you are trained in working this way, it will become second nature.
