Ergonomic Workstation Tip of the Month Book Reading at Home or in the OfficeReading the average book usually means just holding the book in your hand or leaving it lying flat on your desk or lap. It's usually not a big deal - you hardly even think about it. But if that book were oversized, you may soon find it's a big deal, especially if you also happen to be doing other things at the same time, like copying or typing on a keyboard. In these cases, the usual way of holding books just won't do. Hence the idea of the Book Holder.
Whether you are reading just for recreation or as part of your work, there are several different styles of book holder to select from: mobile book holders on caster wheels, desktop versions for extra stability, or portable ones for those on the go. This month we will look at mobile and desktop articulating book holders, designed especially for those who need as much flexibility in positioning as possible. These are also the largest models available.
Mobile Book Holders
Persons with conditions (physical or logistic) that would make normal book holding difficult or impossible, but who prefer to read either sitting down (in a chair, for example) or standing up (in a classroom, for example), may want to consider this style of bookholder. Positioned on caster wheels and extending to reading heights for standing or sitting, the mobile book holder will take the weight of any book off your hands so that you can focus on reading and not holding. The possible applications here are only limited by your imagination, but the key features of this style are mobility and reading angle. The Levo Free-Standing Book Holder (see picture above) is designed for the book-lover who enjoys reading while sitting in their favourite chair or reclining, since it can be easily moved around the house and stored when not in use, and also angled slightly downwards (using page holders to keep the book from flipping pages or falling off) for comfortable viewing. It even has a stylish look yet is built solid (with a heavy iron metal base).
Desktop Articulating Book Holders
If mobility is not a critical issue but maneuverability is, then a book holder that attaches to your desktop or workstation and is easily adjustable in height (vertical and horizontal) and viewing angle is the ideal solution. This style of book holder is available in various models. The Levo Desktop Book Holder is a good example, being virtually identical to the Free-Standing model except for its lack of mobility. Attached to your desk, it still has the flexibility to be moved into an optimal viewing position or moved back when not in use. The new Ultimate Document Holder from Foxbay can also be used as an articulating book holder, since it has all the flexibility of an articulating arm (which is the same as those used for LCD monitors) and can easily bear the weight of even the heaviest books (the 7-Flex arm can hold up to 7 lbs of weight). Depending on your specific requirements, either of these arms has a good chance of working for you. If not, additional adjustments are possible to meet those requirements. In some cases, these book holders can even be used as writing surfaces.
