Ergonomic Workstation Tip of the Month The RollerMouse PRO vs. The New RollerMouse PRO2The new RollerMouse PRO2 has some new features that distinguish it from the RollerMouse PRO. Although these features are improvements on the design and functionality of the RollerMouse PRO, we should briefly discuss these differences and how they may affect your choice of keyboard, especially if you have previously owned a RollerMouse PRO and are thinking of upgrading to the RollerMouse PRO2.
The most significant change concerns the platform for the keyboard. In the PRO, there is a flat tray attachment that slides into a flat 3" protrusion extending from the base. This platform will raise the keyboard about 3/8ths of an inch (1 cm) and is about 8 inches deep. Most conventional keyboards will fit easily onto this platform, however there is no height adjustability for the keyboard. This could be problematic if you are using an extremely thin keyboard. The PRO2, on the other hand, has attachable keyboard risers that can raise your keyboard to several different heights, but these risers are designed to work best with conventional rectangular keyboards and not the adjustable/separated keyboards like the Kinesis Freestyle Solo Keyboard (with or without VIP or V3 accessories) and the Goldtouch Adjustable Keyboard. Not only are there three height adjustments, but you can also angle your keyboard negatively (sloping down from the front), which can provide additional ergonomic benefits to your workstation setup. Keep these points in mind when considering purchasing a new RollerMouse. If you already have a RollerMouse PRO with a separated keyboard, stick with your PRO; otherwise, the PRO2 will give you more versatility.
Some other differences between the PRO and PRO2 are the softer and smoother palm supports of the PRO2 (the leather-like material is easier to clean, too) and the changing of the top two buttons from Auto Scroll and Click Lock to the more common Copy and Paste functions. These, too, are positive changes that make the PRO2 easier to use and maintain than the PRO. As always, the sleek and attractive design is the same.
Overall, the added improvements of the PRO2 significantly enhance the ergonomic value of the RollerMouse PRO series. Because conventional keyboard styles are continually changing over time, with more compact and slender models available today than ever before, the RollerMouse, too, is changing to meet these stylistic changes. At the same time, it will maintain its proven ergonomic design, giving new users the same ergonomic benefits that older users have enjoyed for years.
